And Introducing....Nazar!

Thursday, October 23, was our big day. Our entourage of two cars--consisting of Steve, Jamie, Olga (our facilitator) Angelina (our paperwork translator), the regional social worker, and our two drivers--headed out to the Green Forest Regional Special Needs Orphanage. Nazar's home is located about 20 minutes south of Kharkov, in a small village.

There is NO way to describe what it felt like to pull up to the small cluster of old buildings, walk single-file to the baby house, and enter the room where we waited on a couch for the orphanage workers to bring Nazar out to see us. A nice lady brought him out to the room,
stood him up in front of us, and walked him toward us.

Jamie got to hold him first, followed by Steve. He is so tiny! Although he is three years old, he only weighs about 16 pounds. The workers call him the "little mite". (In these photos, he's wearing about three layers of clothing, as the orphanage is cold). He reached out to our faces and seemed to wonder who in the world we were. He was a bit drowsy, as he had just been awakened from a nap, and he sat down a few times to snooze away.

Nazar doesn't talk yet, and was quiet the whole time, although he smiled a lot.

We spent about 25 minutes with him, while our
entourage watched and smiled (except for the social worker, who was rather stern-faced the whole time),
and then it was time for us to go. We will return to see him tomorrow, and will be allowed to spend a little more time with each visit.

Jamie!!!

He's beautiful!!! I didnt realize he was that small either! I only saw him once, very briefly and he was in stroller. I know exactly where you are in the pictures - upstairs in the building where our girls lived.

Can't wait to see more pics and updates!

Steve and Jamie,
First, your house is still standing (no smoke rising) and I haven't noticed any further die-off of trees or weed invasion, nor have I heard from your housesitter, so all is well here. Second, Jamie, thank you for your kind note. My pleasure. And third, your blog is one for the books, Steve. Seeing Nazar (who weighs as much as Henry), your descriptive narrative and photos, all the while visiting historical sites, is sensational. I was brought to tears when you and Jamie met him for the first time. That was way beyond a Kodak moment. Following with interest and love, Nancy

Nazar is a beautiful little boy. I am so happy for all of you. I am enjoying the history and photos as well. I visited Kiev in the 70's and loved the people and the food.
Thanks for keeping us all up to date. Can't wait to meet him.

How awesome for you! We are so excited for you, and we cannot wait for Monday for you. We hope it works out on Monday!

Don't worry about the weight - Garrett weighed in at 19 pounds in early September, and we have him up to 20 1/2 pounds when we weighed in on Thursday. Nazar will love the American food! We cannot keep Garrett filled up - bananas are his fav...

We have tried to post blogs a couple of times the past week, but no luck, so we hope this gets through! Have a great time with him!
